An 8-bit pirate-themed Play-to-Earn NFT game on the ETH blockchain — built for gamers, not just investors.
Project SOS is an 8-bit pirate-themed P2E NFT game on the ETH blockchain. The initiative aimed to develop a fully functional playable MMORPG — one that prioritized gameplay over the typical play-to-earn mechanics flooding the space. A multiplayer experience as close to a traditional RPG flagship game as possible, with NFT utility and staking capabilities layered on top.
The project encompassed a full visual system, UX/UI design, and illustration work — all built around a cohesive 8-bit aesthetic that felt authentic to the genre while standing apart from the noise of the NFT world.
A fully realized 8-bit visual identity — from pirate character traits and rarities to a cohesive brand language spanning the game, website, and community.
A dashboard experience built for minting and upgrading assets before entering gameplay — blending retro game aesthetics with modern usability.
Every pirate built pixel by pixel in Adobe Photoshop across eight trait categories — producing tens of thousands of possible combinations with assigned rarities.
Each pirate features eight trait categories — from clothing and weapons to accessories and backgrounds — generated with randomized logic to produce tens of thousands of possible combinations. Every trait carries an assigned rarity and positioning contingency to ensure visual coherence across the entire collection.
Every single asset was built pixel by pixel in Adobe Photoshop. No shortcuts, no shortcuts — just deliberate, handcrafted illustration at the smallest possible scale.
Clothing, weapons, accessories, backgrounds — each layer independently randomized with assigned rarities. The rarest pirates are the rarest by design, not by accident.
Four months of development were spent building a following through Discord and Twitter — growing an engaged community before a single pirate was minted. The public launch hit mid-March 2022 on OpenSea, and within a short window, 94% of owners had staked their pirates.
That retention rate wasn't accidental. It came from designing a project people actually wanted to hold onto — not just flip.
"94% of owners staked their pirates — because we built something worth holding."
Community Launch — Project SOS, 2022The web experience reflects the 8-bit retro video game aesthetic of the game itself — pixel-perfect visuals paired with an exploration-style layout that draws players into the world before they've even minted. The dashboard functions as the entry point for minting and upgrading assets before entering gameplay.
Every design decision was made to serve two audiences simultaneously: the NFT investor looking for value, and the gamer looking for something actually worth playing.
The web dashboard was designed as the gateway to the game — a place to mint new pirates, upgrade existing ones, and enter the world. Clean enough for newcomers, deep enough for collectors.
Project SOS challenged the stigma around play-to-earn by building a fully immersive web game — not a passive idle-clicking experience. Players could earn rewards through real gameplay, not just by holding assets and watching numbers move.
The goal was simple: make something that appeals to investors and gamers alike. Because the best NFT projects aren't just financial instruments — they're worlds people want to live in.
